Water System Intention Leads to World Class Invention

As the Intel construction project in New Albany progresses, Porta Kleen has stepped up to meet the growing demand for high-capacity water and waste solutions at the site’s large construction trailers. By engineering state-of-the-art Water System Trailers (WSTs), Porta Kleen has delivered a mobile and winterized solution that has impressed even the most experienced construction professionals.

The initial challenge arose from the need to provide water and waste management for 21-wide job trailers—a scale previously unfamiliar to Porta Kleen. "We weren’t really familiar with providing such large capacity tanks and industrial-grade water pumps for these types of setups," said Area Sales Manager Tyler Zook. "At first, we just used stand-alone tanks—1,000-gallon water tanks and 1,200-gallon waste tanks—and installed them with our best judgment. It worked, but as the workforce grew, so did the demand."

With over 120 workers per trailer using the facilities multiple times a day, demand quickly outgrew the initial setup.

To solve this, President Adam Black worked with Engineering Manager Neil Dewitt and the MPW technology team to develop several 14-foot, hydraulically adjustable WSTs. "These trailers are fully winterized, insulated, and contain dual water pumps and macerating pumps, ensuring that if one system fails, there’s an immediate backup," Zook said.

The ability to flip a switch and seamlessly transition to a secondary pump minimizes downtime, which is crucial given that these trailers serve key personnel from Intel and Bechtel.

Rather than installing permanent underground water and sanitary lines, the WSTs provide a faster, more practical solution. Zook said that the system offers a seamless alternative to traditional infrastructure, making it an ideal choice for temporary setups at large-scale construction sites.

A major challenge during development was ensuring the system could function in winter conditions. "We used to spend thousands on custom heated blankets to protect tanks, and sometimes the turnaround time was weeks," Zook said. "Now, the WSTs are built to handle all seasons, thanks to built-in insulation and space heaters."

The effectiveness of the system has earned recognition from industry professionals. "We’ve had people from Bechtel and Intel tell us they’ve worked in multiple countries and have never seen a system like this before," Zook said.

As Intel’s construction continues, Porta Kleen is scaling up operations to match demand. The company is establishing a dedicated laydown yard and job trailer on-site, allowing it to operate more like a subcontractor with full-time equipment and materials stationed at the project.

The development of the WSTs is more than just a solution to an immediate need; it represents Porta Kleen’s commitment to innovation and customer-focused problem-solving. With this technology already proving its value, the company is well-positioned to support other large-scale construction projects in the future.

Zook emphasized the durability of the system, explaining that its enclosed and self-sustaining design minimizes the chance of failure. If an issue does arise, it can be quickly addressed, making the WSTs a highly reliable option for large job sites.
