The 2025 Kentucky Derby proved the resilience and professionalism of the Porta Kleen team. Twelve hours of continuous rain, temperatures around 60°F, and unexpected staffing shortages turned the event into a rigorous test of adaptability and teamwork. But despite these hurdles, the Porta Kleen crew made its own “Run for the Roses.”

Louisville Operations Manager Wesley Daihl, who subbed for an unavailable manager, faced the absence of two key team members. He swiftly reorganized a lean five-person core setup team—including Route Driver Dan Geiger, Lot Attendant Brian McGill, Delivery Driver John Hayes, and Branch Manager Ron Sagers—while integrating restroom attendants from multiple branches.

Notably, Service Technician Isaiah Mace, with only a few months on the job, showed strong initiative by stepping up as an impromptu trainer. Looking back on the situation, Daihl said, "If I didn’t have those people that sat and listened to me and were there for me on projects that I couldn’t do myself, it wouldn’t have gotten there."

Office Administrator Christina Huff volunteered as a restroom attendant. Her compassionate assistance to guests, especially on Breast Cancer Awareness Day, highlighted the team's commitment to exceptional service. “It was an honor to represent the company,” she said. “I look forward to working many more events in the future.”

Veteran mother/daughter attendants "Big Nora" and "Little Nora" Paskins brought invaluable experience, while McGill managed the high-traffic VIP trailer area. Daily morning briefings ensured alignment, and Division Manager Chris Waite's pre-event planning facilitated smooth operations.

“The success of this year’s ‘mud fest’ Kentucky Derby was a team effort, and no person was greater than the other,” Sagers said, adding, “We all worked as a team to deliver before the event, service units during the event, and pick up the units afterward.”

The 151st Kentucky Derby unfolded at Churchill Downs on May 3, 2025. Despite the muddy track and persistent rain, a crowd of 147,406 set an event record with a $234.4 million betting handle.
