Jacob Betts’ path to Sanitation Branch Manager at Porta Kleen is one of growth through hard work and initiative. “I was always eager to solve problems, to lead by example, and take initiative,” he said. “I also tried to be there and help others when needed.”

In January 2022, Betts joined the company as a Route Coordinator in the logistics department, quickly earning a promotion to Safety Coordinator. There, he handled Samsara data, safety compliance, and even supported the Hydro Excavation division, where he gained valuable cross-functional experience.

Betts’ drive and curiosity soon led to another promotion, this time to Branch Manager of the sanitation division in Lancaster. “Early on, I made it a priority to understand not just how the work was done, but why it mattered to the team, to the clients, and to safety standards,” he said.

Today, Betts oversees a team responsible for sanitation services across daily routes and large-scale events. His mornings begin with safety reviews and schedule checks, followed by field inspections, client visits, and planning for upcoming work. “It’s a hands-on leadership role,” he said. “You’re doing a little bit of everything, and communication is huge!”

One of Betts’ biggest early challenges came with the Lost Lands music festival, Porta Kleen’s largest event. “I had very little prior knowledge about it, but I knew right away it would be a major learning opportunity,” he said. “Despite being fast-paced and demanding, it turned out to be one of our most successful years.”

What Betts enjoys most about the job is the relationships he’s built with coworkers and customers. “It creates a positive environment,” he said. Balancing the field and the office is the most difficult part. “You’re constantly switching gears between managing teams on-site and handling compliance, reports, and planning.”

Betts’ advice for others pursuing a similar path is to have patience. “There’s a lot to learn at first, but once you find your rhythm, it becomes manageable.”

Nomination to the Manager Development Program highlights Betts’ fast-moving career. “It’s helped me understand the business better and connect with leaders from other divisions,” he said.

Outside of work, Jacob and his wife are raising a 9-year-old son and newborn twins. “Spending time with them is incredibly important,” he said. “I love going to my son’s sporting events and being outdoors whenever I can.”

Porta Kleen’s culture encourages promotion from within and investing in people who take ownership of every situation. Betts continues to set an example for others ready to rise through the ranks by focusing on safety, service, and teamwork.
